The 2008 CERT Training program kicked off today with about twenty persons in attendance. We had five attendees from Derry in support of our new regional concept for sharing of resources. The trainees learned about CERT procedures and practices. Next weeks program will include First Aid and CPR training. A big THANK YOU! to Mike's Red barn and Dunkin Donuts for providing coffee, refreshments and lunch. And a special thanks to the Salem Fire Department for allowing us to use their training room.
Monday, January 28, 2008 New CERT Training Program
Salem New Hampshire and the Regional Citizen Corps Council are working together to form a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). We are teaming with the Venture Scouting Program of the Boy Scouts of America to expand our pool of volunteers. Our exciting new partnership allows us to create additional opportunities for training and interactive field exercises.
This important program educates citizens on disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact our community. It will educate adults, and girls and boys 14 and older, to be more knowledgeable in first aid, disaster preparedness and household safety. They will also receive training in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. The Town of Salem and the Salem Fire Department provide major support for this program and are working closely with the Salem and Regional Citizen Corp Councils in designing thorough and informative instruction.
Using the training received in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace, before professional responders arrive. CERT members can also support emergency response agencies by taking an active role in preparedness projects in their community.
Several of our neighboring communities have organized these teams. They have been very effective in assisting their towns during emergencies that have occurred in recent years. After the flooding of 2006, over 25 volunteers from Salem helped residents with cleanup in the most heavily damaged areas. These and other volunteers across the state were recognized by Governor John Lynch and Volunteer New Hampshire for their actions.
The 2 day CERT training program, organized by Dave Annicelli and Tony Lakis, begins on February 16, with a second session on February 23. Upon completion volunteers receive nationally recognized certification and are eligible to become active members of the Salem CERT.
To register, please call Fausto Molinet, chair of the Salem Citizen Corps Council at (603) 893-8013 or email faustom@salemnhcitizencorps.org. You may also call the Salem Fire Department at (603) 890-2208. Please join us in this vital and rewarding program.
